Our Rich History
About Suma Park
'Suma Park', formerly known as Frankfurt-on Sea, was erected in the 1880s for prominent stud breeder and horse racing entrepreneur James Wilson of St Albans, Whittington. Stephen E. Bailey gave the name Suma Park to Wilson's racing establishment after the family property at Orange in N.S.W. The original stables housed up to 24 racehorses.
In 1876 Wilson's horse 'Briseis' won the Melbourne Cup and he commissioned the Ferguson & Urie stained glass company of North Melbourne to create a feature window depicting the head of Briseis. Originally installed in his Camberwell home, the last remaining part of the window containing the horse head, is installed in the door to the former smoking room at Suma Park.
Suma Park Homestead is a distinctive late Victorian Villa The large single storey dichromatic brick villa residence was designed by J.T.Conlon, a Melbourne Architect. An earlier weatherboard cottage survived, along with the original stables, and are now a feature of the property for weddings & events.
